Kurume is written with the characters for "long time," "rice," and "stop."

There are various theories about the origin of its name, including:

・It evolved from "Kumai-ichi" (苦米市) to mean "to store."
・It was the location of a granary belonging to Prince Kurume (also known as Kume-ō), younger brother of Prince Shōtoku.

These stories evoke the current name of Kurume. Furthermore, rice has been a highly valuable food since ancient times, used even for tax payments as an annual tribute, making its value a symbol of wealth.
Perhaps because of this, the whiteness of polished rice symbolized purity, and since hundreds of times more rice grains can be harvested from a single seed, it became a symbol of abundant harvests and prosperity for descendants. And when important guests arrived, white rice was, after all, the ultimate hospitality served in the kyōzen (feast).

Currently, there are 15 sake breweries in Kurume City, and it has long been known as a city of rice and sake brewing, renowned as "Nada of the East and Jōjima of the West" for its famous sake.

The rice of Kurume, a city of "hotomeki" (meaning hospitality), has spun this "food," "culture," and "history" of Japan, which has been continuously passed down since ancient times.

We invite you to share the delicious Kurume rice, grown with the rich water and blessings of the land of Chikushi, with your family and loved ones.
